Why is my hair so oily?

Oily hair and scalp can be caused by multiple factors. Some people’s hormones can cause sebaceous glands to produce more sebum naturally therefore you can only help prevent it by using the right products and taking the correct steps to help. Such as the Kerastase Symbiose Bain Purete anti-Pelliculaire purifying shampoo with laylicic acid and piroctone olamine.

Another cause of oily hair can be product build up. Drug store shampoos are one example of build ups that contain Man made products such as sulfates and silicones which leave invisible barriers on the outer hair shaft. This can cause the ends to become dry or sensitized because the natural oils cannot penetrate properly. Causing the roots to produce more oil to try and make up for the lack of nutrition on the ends, creating an imbalance. The Keraste Specifique Bain Divalent shampoo is the perfect product to tackle this specific problem using ammino acids and vitamin B6 to give your hair the care and attention it needs. For an added after care the Specifique universal defense serum for unbalanced scalps can be left in the hair and used on the daily basis using prebiotics and vitamin C.

Another type of oily scalp can be caused by oily dandruff. This happens where excess sebum from your sebaceous gland reacts with yeast present in the skin known as Malassezia, resulting in thick greasy flakes that are difficult to remove. The Keraste symbiose scalp treatment from the Symbiose range mentioned earlier acts as an exfoliant that helps remove the buildup of skin cells on the scalp while soothing and not irritating it any further, this is offered as an in-salon treatment but also is available for retail sale.

Over washing the hair can cause the hair to become oilier as it strips the hair of its natural PH balance causing the scalp to go into overdrive to produce more sebum so that it gets the nutrition it needs. Humidity or intense exercise leaves a build of sweat that mixes with the oils can also cause it to look slick and dirty.

Straight hair is especially prone to collecting oil. Because the hair shaft doesn’t have texture or waves so that it slides down easier collecting all over the hair making it more visible.

Expert Tip

Shampooing the hair twice helps cleanse the hair properly giving you a longer time with a clean scalp keeping the oils at bay. The first shampoo removes build up and residue while the second shampoo cleanses and nourishes. The shampoo molecules contain 2 parts hydrophilic which is attracted to water and lipophilic that is attracted to the oils as the lipophilic chains lift the dirt and oils from the hair the hydrophilic chains wash it away with the water. When using shampoo, the scalp should not be overstimulated if you have excessive oils as this can cause the glands to work in excess. Conditioner should never be applied to the roots; Mid lengths and ends only. If you are naturally oilier than others it is also suggested that you use tepid water, so it is neither too hot nor cold.
